What Are the Tang Soo Do Belt Ranks?

Tang soo do is a Korean martial art that follows a belt ranking system to signify a student’s progress and specific stage of achievement.

The belt ranking system in tang soo do starts with the white belt, which represents a beginner student. As the student progresses, they move on to the yellow belt, followed by the orange belt. These belts signify the initial stages of learning and building a foundation in the art.

After the orange belt, students can earn the red stripe, which indicates that they are close to achieving their next belt rank. This is an important step in their journey, as it signifies their dedication and progress.

The next belt rank is the dark blue belt, followed by the brown belt. These belts represent the intermediate level of skill and knowledge in tang soo do. Students at this stage have gained a good understanding of the techniques and principles of the martial art.

Moving further up the belt ranks, students can achieve the 1st gup, which is a brown belt with a black stripe. This signifies that they are approaching the final step before achieving black belt status.

The ultimate goal for many tang soo do practitioners is to achieve the black belt. The black belt represents mastery and expertise in the art. However, it’s important to note that achieving a black belt is not the end of one’s journey in tang soo do. There are further levels of achievement beyond the initial black belt.

After achieving the black belt, students can continue to progress through different degrees or dans. The 1st dan is the first degree of black belt, followed by the 2nd dan, 3rd dan, and so on. Each dan represents a higher level of skill and knowledge in tang soo do.

In summary, the tang soo do belt ranking system is an important aspect of the martial art. It allows students to track their progress and serves as a motivating factor to continue learning and improving. From the white belt to the black belt and beyond, each belt represents a specific stage of achievement in a student’s journey in tang soo do. So go ahead, embrace this cycle of seasons in your martial arts journey and keep striving for excellence!
